Lejo was born in Scheveningen, the Netherlands — literally inches from the beach — and has called Aruba home since 1993. A passionate naturalist and lifelong adventurer, he is as comfortable exploring reefs on a dive as he is collecting shoreline treasures at low tide. That intimate relationship with the ocean fuels everything he creates. A self-taught artist and devoted art lover, Lejo works across mediums to capture the mood, movement and mythology of the sea. He sculpts with driftwood, shells, coral, clay and cold porcelain; paints on canvas; and builds layered, tactile pieces using papier-mâché and mixed media. Inspired by mermaids, beach culture and the chromatic light of the Caribbean, his art blends found materials and imagination to celebrate the beauty and vulnerability of coastal worlds — inviting viewers to reconnect with the ocean and reconsider our role in protecting it.
