Unchained - A family love story

This mixed-media artwork explores the artist Dutch and African heritage and the way those two identities exist together within her.

The background is made with African fabrics, representing her African ancestry, culture, history, and the generations that came before her. Layered over this is Dutch fabric covering exactly 50% of the canvas, representing the fact that she is 50% Dutch. The equal division is intentional: neither side is more important than the other. Together, they form who she is.

The Delft blue elements are a visual metaphor for Dutch identity, referencing traditional Dutch houses, shoes, and tiles. At the center, the Dutch King with his golden crown represents the Netherlands, its monarchy, and the history connected to her Dutch heritage.

On the left side, African masks represent African ancestry, spirituality, cultural expression, and the richness of African traditions.

The artwork is ultimately about identity, heritage, and belonging. It reflects the same journey told in her family’s love story: generations before her crossed cultural and racial boundaries and chose love over the limitations society placed on them. Her identity is the result of those choices—a living connection between Africa and the Netherlands, and a reminder that love, like identity, cannot be divided or confined by borders.
